Calibrate your iPhone battery

As some of you might know, I’ve taken the plunge and bought myself an iPhone 3G 8GB. I got more and more frustrated with my BlackBerry Torch 9800, an old Nokia 3310 could have worked for me.

Anyway, I picked up the phone off Gumtree for a decent price and decided I’d Jailbreak the phone before anything else. I chose the 3G over the 3GS or 4 to see how I’d like the phone – needless to say, I wish I’d gotten the 4 or 4S.

So, I get the phone and run through the RedSn0w Jailbreak (I’ll post up a blog on my findings on the Jailbreak a little later) and found that the battery drain was insane and seemed a little erratic. Dropping from a full charge to 50% in a few minutes. First I thought it was the actual battery causing the issues, which you guys might think too.

A simple re-calibrate of the battery solved everything.

If you’re seeing a rapid battery drain and eratic battery meter levels, follow these steps to sort the issues out:

  1. Hard reset the iPhone by holding down the Home and Sleep button. Ignore the Turn Of notification. Release when you see the Apple logo
  2. Run the battery down until the phone turns off itself. You can either leave the phone, or run hardware intensive apps to do it quicker. Enable location settings, notifications for everything, camera etc etc to deplete the battery quicker.
  3. Once the phone has turned itself off, re-charge the phone (either on or off, doesn’t make a difference) until it’s fully charged

Running through these steps will see a better battery meter reading. Hope it helps!
